Resistance.
It was 06:16 on a gloomy Tuesday morning. Exactly one minute ago, I was rudely awakened by my alarm.
After hopping out of bed, I was stopped dead in my tracks—not by anything or anyone, but by the little voice in my head.
I stood there, staring at my bed. I had two options that would alter the trajectory of my day:
Hop back into my warm, cozy, and comfortable bed.
Resist that urge and go for a grueling workout.
The prospect of grabbing my bike, cycling to the gym through the chilly rain, and completing a tough leg day sounded like hell on earth.
Who wants to do that?
Future me does.
So, I did it.
Because we’re all fighting off resistance. Every day. Everyone.
The resistance to do something productive. The resistance to pursue that one project we keep putting off. The resistance to call up that old friend.
A lot of the barriers in our lives are made up in our heads. They’re mental, not physical.
There’s no guy who’s going to slide tackle us the moment we step foot into the gym. It’s the voice in our heads saying someone will stop us.
By reminding ourselves why we’re doing it in the first place and knowing what is on the other side of resistance, we make that little voice yell less loudly. And we break through the imaginary glass ceiling.
